The portrayal of women in bollywood is not as degrading as most people make it sound. It usually follows a pattern. People decides what they want to do therefore it shouldn't be considered "degrading" just because a certain amount of people seem to be against it. That being said, Indian cinema has picked up a trend of putting Item numbers in their movies, regardless of which there are other ways in which women are being portrayed too.

1. THE ITEM SONGS Starting with the most popular one, Almost every Films these days seems to have one item song with a woman dancing in an appealing manner.

2. THE CARE BEAR There's always this one feminine character in a film who's a total care bear, could be a mother or a friend but that characters main role is to care endlessly about the masculine protagonist.

3. THE DIVA This woman is almost top class on fashion, usually potrayed as someone really fashionable and mostly as a not so bright character but not always.

4. THE TOM BOY These are those women who have the best humor and are always clashing with the men and are seen uplifting the female protagonist by telling her how to hold her own and being strong. (She's the bhai.)

5. THE BADASS This one is the best of all world's. She's charming, holds her own, cares when she has to and when the time comes she has the most badass role in the whole movie.
